I was introduced to essential oils in the summer of 2013 by the doula I hired while preparing to have my baby. I had been struggling with a weak respiratory system for most of my life. Pregnancy was no different, except that I was much more cautious about what I put in or on my body. For extra support, my doula recommended I try a particular respiratory blend, consisting of Laurel Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Eucalyptus Leaf/Stem, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ravensara Leaf, and Cardamom Seed essential oils. All of these oils are known for their positive effects on the respiratory system.
At the first crack of the cap, I noticed that the aroma was minty, hot, fresh and airy. My sinuses instantly felt more open. Little did I know with the first whiff that this respiratory blend would be my gateway oil! My husband and I had both been experiencing the effects of seasonal changes. Since this blend helps minimize those effects, we mixed a couple drops of it with coconut oil and rubbed it on our chests. We immediately felt like our airways were clearer, and we could once again take deep breaths. I started keeping the bottle at my bedside for neat applications (without carrier oil, aka quick dabs) on my neck, behind my ears or even directly on my face over my sinuses (always careful to stay away from my eyes). We’ve even used it to help our son when his respiratory system needs additional support. When he was an infant, we heavily diluted a few drops of the respiratory blend with fractionated coconut oil in a roller bottle and applied to his feet. His sensitive toddler skin still requires heavy dilution now, but not quite as much as a baby.
We also diffuse this blend at night, whenever seasonal or environmental changes challenge our respiratory systems, when we have periodic stuffy noses, and during other occasional respiratory weaknesses. The blend helps clear our airways and calm our senses; we get much more restful sleep when we can breathe!
